Many people don’t know that Chuck Norris was one of the catalysts in spreading the word of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and the Gracie family in the United States.
Chuck Norris began studing BJJ under the Machado’s (Carlos Machado) in the 80s and introduced the Gracie’s on a full scale to the UFAF (his Tang Soo Do organization) in 1988 during their annual seminar.
In this seminar footage, shot by Danny Lane (one of Chuck Norris’ instructors), you see a full lineup of the Gracie clan, including Rorion, Relson, Rickson, Royce, Renzo, Carlos Machado and more sharing their art to a room full of Black Belts (in Tang Soo Do).
It’s fun to hear Rorion talk a little history of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, and see Rickson and others demonstrate their art. It’s also fun to hear the story of Chuck Norris being choked out by a then 75-year old Helio Gracie while visiting the Gracie’s in Brazil.
The video shows not only the ground fighting aspects of Jiu Jitsu, but also some of the self-defense techniques taught by the Gracie family as well.
It’s an interesting and fun video to watch of the early days of Jiu Jitsu in the United States before the UFC changed everything…
