Grandmaster Helio Gracie is arguably one of the most influential martial artists in the “modern era” of martial arts.

He is considered an icon in Brazil and his (and his family’s) story is legendary.

Hélio and his brother Carlos founded Gracie Jiu Jitsu (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), which was developed from old-school Judo (Kosen Judo) specializing in ground fighting techniques that was taught to Carlos Gracie by Mitsuyo Maeda.

“I fought to prove that my art was good. To prove that the jiu-jitsu I practiced was superior to other fighting systems”

~ Hélio Gracie

In this documentary, which aired on the Brazilian “The Biography Channel”, you will learn the story of Helio Gracie.

From the early years when he was forced to simply watch his brother train in Judo due to his frail health to establishing Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

This video was graciously translated by the Valente Brothers (Gracie Jiu Jitsu – Miami).
